The Making of a Man

What makes a man?

Michael D Butler Deer Hunting as a teen The Making of a Man

This 1963 Chevy I bought from my dad when I turned 16 from the money I saved from mowing lawns

There are many things that go into the ‘making of a man’ I suppose. Growing older, taking on responsibility, time spent with dad, growing facial hair or buying a pick up truck.

There are so many stories of ‘manhood’ learned on this camping trip at Camp Gruber, in 1984, age 15.

I had this photograph of me killing my deer on a Father-son hunting trip at age 15 but the photo I had was taken with a 126 camera and not that hi-resolution but thanks to my Facebook friend and fellow Vinita Hornet, Michael Collins who posted this high-res image to Facebook I’ve got it preserved for my grand-kids. I miss this old truck!

The Jewish sons have a Bar Mitzvah at age 13 which is their ‘rite of passage’ in becoming a man. There is no clearly defined coming of age for teens in the USA but I must say that somewhere between killing my dear and buying my dads pick up is, in my mind, when I became a man.

In fact I love 1963 Chevy’s so much I’ve been known to pull over and snap a photo when I see one, flash forward to this past summer:

How do you like this 1963 Chevy Truck? (maybe a 62) looks like the one I had in High School but mine was Turquoise-I liked that truck! 3 on the tree! No I didn't buy it-it was near my boys house-you like? Broken Arrow, OK

My brother Ken age 17 in 1984 this was Ken's Senior Year-Notice the Lantern hanging from the tree on the right-That green canvas tent was a bear to put up-But a Blast!

Ken (Kenny as a kid) and Michael Collins, the read head in this picture with the big 28 lbs carp-loved to hunt and fish. I went along for the ride because there was not much else to do.

Michael Collins' mom even cooked this carp! I'm holding the bass on the right.

What memories do you have of your upbringing that are good memories? Hunting and fishing are some of my good memories of childhood. I’m glad we only had 3 channels on the television. This made us go outside and create adventure. I want my kids to have some of the same opportunities that I had! I have 4 sons: Michael Jr. Matt, Josh and Jeremiah; stay tuned you may meet them soon!

Rick Santorum Best Choice for GOP & Why He Won’t Get Nomination

Let’s Face it My Conservative Friends Rick Santorum is the Most Conservative but Will Not Get the GOP Nomination!

rick santorum gop Rick Santorum Best Choice for GOP & Why He Wont Get Nomination

The GOP has a track record of running guys that are inarticulate  and RHINOS (Republican in Name Only) Remember Bob Dole? John McCain?

Even though today’s Reuter’s News shows Santorum won Iowa

The GOP has become a party that I am embarrassed to say I belong to. The GOP was once for smaller Government and less spending-that was until they got into office. I love President Bush for his amazing war on terror but President George W. Bush NEVER vetoed a spending bill and did ZERO to close the borders, so:

Those to the left of the Conservative Party would say:

  • Rick Santorum hates gays.

  • Rick Santorum is against abortion.

  • Rick Santorum wants to cut Grandmas welfare check.

And these are the exact talking points that he should run on!

Rick does not hate gays. He just doesn’t think the Federal govt. should mandate the states pay the insurance of a gay partner.

Rick is in favor of protecting the unborn child in a mother’s womb and believes in giving a mother all of the facts before an abortion including letting her hear her babies heartbeat and see her baby smile on ultra sound.

Rich Santorum is not in favor of giving crack heads and dead beats welfare checks while the average American struggles to make ends meet. It’s time for the nut job Ron Paul to stop his campaign and it’s time for the true Conservatives to let their voices be heard in South Carolina on Saturday!

I liked the Steelers as a kid because growing up in Oklahoma everyone including my brother and dad liked the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys were OK but I had to be different, I was a Steelers fan. Terry Bradshaw, Lynn Swann, Mean Joe Green-those were the days. But as far as great teams and great quaterbacks go this year’s Denver Broncos have not only gotten the attention of the world of sports but Tim Tebow and John 3:16 is now trending on Twitter. Thanksgiving2011 Happy New Year from Michael and Michelle Butler! Happy 2012!

Michael, Michelle, Michael Jr. Matt, Grandma, Grandpa, Seated Jeremiah with Muffin and Josh

2011 was an amazingly crazy year with many ups and downs! I’m not one to send out Christmas cards even though I am a big believer in Christmas and Christ coming to bring us new life. I have to say there is so much for me, personally to be thankful for this year. On April 17, me and Michelle celebrated our 1-year anniversary and that has been an amazing journey of God’s goodness to me as He reminds me daily, through her, how much He loves me!

On February 16 my sixteen year old who is now 17 was diagnosed with the most aggressive form of Leukemia. After 3 rounds of chemo and a bone marrow transplant he is totally healed and in recovery! Michael and Matthew (standing back row, ages 21 and 19) were perfect matches. Michael was chosen for the transplant and Josh got to come home from a 5 1/2 month hospital stay. We are grateful for God’s healing grace on his life.

What are you thankful for this year?  Leave us a comment below.

It’s going to be a great year! Happy New Year to you all. We hope it is filled with much laughter, joy and peace for you and yours!
