Dear Dr. Kristi,My coworker ywaals wants to play chess, chat about some cool web site, or show me some youtube video when I am trying to work. How do I nicely either tell them to let me work, or quickly put up with their interrupting banter.

Comment on Tim Tebow Throws for 316 Yards is God Speaking to Us? by Cherita

I am at a little davgdsantiae on this topic because I gave up watch sports of any kind in 1973. I think that was the year. Whatever the year it was the year the Redskins lost the Super Bowl to Miami 14 to 7 (they should have lost 42 to 0)! It is not that I am anti-sports. It is just that I get way to involved and obsessed. I shout, scream, cheer and generally make a fool of myself. At the end of that particular game I got so angry I took of my shoe and threw it in the general direction of the television. Unfortunately, my aim, or anger, was too focused and the shoe hit the TV which kinda, sorta, exploded. That ended my following sports forever! I promised myself that I would never allow myself to get so emotionally involved again in something that is (or should be), after all, just a game. So I haven’t watched football, basketball, hockey, the Olympics, or even competitive Tiddley Winks since 1973. All of that to say I have no idea what Tebowing involves. More exactly I have never to my knowledge seen Tebow and don’t know what it is he does during the game which causes folks to comment. I have always felt funny about watching football players fall on one knee praying, making the Sign of the Cross, or pointing upward to the heavens after a touchdown or a particularly brilliant play. I’m fairly sure that God doesn’t have a favorite team. If the action is motivated by a true sense of gratitude to God for the gift of life, and health, and talent that was reflected in the play I can understand. But such a gracious response to God’s gift is even better expressed in the attitude of Jesus expression in Matthew 6:6 “Whenever YOU pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father, who is in secret; and your Father who sees you in secret will reward you.” So in the end I think that public affectations of faith should be carefully considered as to their motivation. Is the expression of a praise of God or is it drawing attention to ourselves in the manner of the hypocrites? An apt public expression of faith is more often an act of compassion, or grace, or service to another done without thought of reward, but as a witness to the realization of our own sin and need for forgiveness and salvation. Acts of compassion, justice, and grace, not acts of piety, are the true fruits of faith. But even then, “do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.” Matthew 6:3.
