Thousands of runners have converged on Tulsa from all 50 states and dozens of nations to run the 6 year old Route 66 Marathon.
At age 38 I realized running a marathon was on my ‘Bucket List’ so I signed up with Fleet Feet Tulsa and started training for the Route 66 Marathon ’08 edition. First a few 5Ks then some 10K’s and 15K’s. I wasn’t able to run my half marathon in OKC because of shin splints in April 2008. Once I healed up and started training again in July and August it was time to get serious. I re-committed to my early morning runs and my long runs.
When it came time for my 18 mile run I was out of town on business so I had to do my 18 miles in the gym on the treadmill which was harder than it sounds but indoors. The 20 miler the next week was grueling but doable with the support of my team at Fleet Feet. My long run done. It was time to ‘taper down’ and rest up. A few short runs and 12 days later it would be time to tackle my first marathon!
My 4 sons ran the last 3 miles with me (which was an unexpected highlight I’d think back on often!) The hardest part of the race was when I thought mile marker 18 was coming up and instead it was only mile marker 16. My goal was to run a ‘sub-5 marathon’ (faster than 5 hours) it took me 5 hours and 16 minutes so that can only mean one thing right?

This is why I'm skipping Chruch tomorrow, not because I'm running it, not this time, but to honor those who are

I think often about my 4 sons and my parents and my brother and his wife who came and cheered me on at the finish line and the friends all along the way who helped me and cheered me on!
So, what’s on your ‘Bucket List’? When will you do your next ‘Venture’? I love the inspirational story of Coach Lou Holtz and may expound more on his ‘Bucket List’ that he created years ago before the movie ever came out and in the midst of a desperate time in his life. What drives you? What are you passionate about?
Many other challenges came after 2008 like my son Joshua’s battle with Cancer just 2 years later- happy ending he survived and now thrives! His story will inspire you!
Josh taught me – do what you can do and know to do today -give the rest to God and rest in His grace – then watch miracles happen!
What were you planning to do in 2012 that is yet undone? Make it happen now…time is rolling on!
When you accomplish a difficult goal it SUPER CHARGES YOU! NOTHING CAN STOP YOU NOW!!
